Aurus got Toyota plant in St. Petersburg

Aurus production will be launched at the former Toyota plant in St. Petersburg by the end of 2024, said the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Earlier it was reported about the plans of Gazprom to join this project

The former Toyota plant in St. Petersburg is transferred to Aurus, production will be launched by the end of 2024, said the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov. His words are quoted by TASS.

Manturov specified that the carmaker received the former plant of the Japanese corporation "a long time ago".

After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, Toyota decided to suspend car production at its plant in St. Petersburg; in March 2023, the Russian assets of the Japanese corporation were sold to NAMI FSUE. The deal excluded an option to buy back the production sites. Aurus is the main shareholder of FGUP NAMI (63.5%), with another 36 and 0.5% of shares owned by the Arab fund Tawazun and Sollers, respectively.

In 2013, the government commissioned the NAMI automotive institute to develop a family of cars on a single modular platform to transport top government officials. Serial production of Aurus was launched in May 2021 in Elabuga (Tatarstan).

Kommersant wrote about the possibility of producing a domestic brand of Aurus cars at the former Toyota plant in January 2024, citing sources. According to them, Gazprom intends to join this project.

At the end of 2023, 115 Aurus cars were sold, the Russian Automobile Dealers Association reported. The manufacturer produces luxury cars - Aurus Senat sedan, Komendant SUV and Arsenal minibus. According to Manturov, the brand plans to expand its product line-up in 2025 with two more affordable models - a large executive sedan and a business class sedan.
